South Sinai Bedu are among the poorest people in the world.

In the past Bedu (or Bedouin) were nomadic, living in tents while flocks of goats and sheep grazed in the desert wadis. Today, most people are sedentary, living in small groups in the desert or in the larger towns of South Sinai.

 

There are around 50,000 Bedu living in the region.

These are resilient communities, full of energy and ideas, but people in South Sinai face huge challenges:

  • Since the collapse of tourism, unemployment is extremely high

  • Of the Bedu who do have work, half are living on less than $1 a day

  • 44% of the adult population has no education at all

  • More than 1 in 10 of the local children are malnourished
